Kate Spade Purses and Bags

The Kate Spade purse line was created by Kate Noel Brosnahan Spade, an average American girl who grew up in Kansas City, Missouri.  After Kate left college in 1986 she took a position at Mademoiselle Magazine, and was Senior Fashion Editor and Head of Accessories until she left the magazine in 1991.

While working at the magazine Kate noticed that there was a lack of stylish but functional purses and so she decided to try her luck at designing her own style of purses.  Kate Spade handbags originally were created of satin finished nylon and other interesting fabrics and designs.  Along with her partner and husband, Andy Spade, Kate Spade purses were introduced to the market in January of 1993.

The combined talents of Andy and Kate, he was creative director in advertising, and Kate’s creative mind and experience in the fashion world were a successful mix.  They created six simple designs that emphasized color, fabric and practicality and these six shapes continue to be Kate Spade purse signature designs.

Kate Spade purses were honored in 1996, by the Council of Fashion Designers of America who awarded Kate with the award of America’s New Fashion Talent in Accessories.  Kate was honored once again by the CFDA in 1998, as Best Accessory Designer of the Year.  One of Kate’s biggest honors was in 1999, when Kate Spade purses were exhibited at the Cooper Hewitt museum for the First National Design Triennial, celebrating American design excellence.
