Kenneth Cole Productions was born in 1982 when Kenneth Cole went broke after spending all his money making shoes in Europe. He returned to New York and was faced with a dilemma. He needed a place to sell his shoes but didn’t have enough money to rent a store.

Hitting on the idea to sell his shoes from the back of a giant truck, he sought permission to park it in Midtown New York, but was told permits were only granted to utility and production companies. That’s when he had another idea. He immediately applied for a permit under the name Kenneth Cole Productions, purportedly for the filming of a fictional movie called “The Birth of a Shoe Company.”

The permit was granted and Cole parked his truck across from the New York Hilton, complete with a director, models as actresses, and even, sometimes, film in the camera!

The stunt was a success; in two days, he sold 40,000 shoes – his entire collection. Thus was the company and legend born.

As a result of his high standards and results, Kenneth Cole has won numerous awards, some of which are FFANY’s – Fashion Medal of Honor Award – and the Extraordinary Voice Award. The latter was in recognition of his invaluable contribution and effort towards AIDS research and awareness.
