 Marc Jacobs is the head designer for the Marc Jacobs label. He is also the head designer of the line Marc by Marc Jacobs and also works as the Creative Director of the French design fashion house, Louis Vuitton. It’s fair to say that Marc Jacobs is one of the most prolific designers in the world. In 1987 he was awarded the Perry Ellis award for New Fashion Talent and he hasn’t looked back since.

Born in 1963, Marc Jacobs attended the High School of Art and Design in New York, graduating in 1981. After an initial career at Charivari, Marc Jacobs joined Parsons, The New School of Design (also found in New York). He designed and sold his first line of clothing—which consisted of hand-knit sweaters—during this period. He also designed his first collection for Reuben Thomas. During his years at Parsons he was awarded the Chester Weinberg Golf thimble award and the Design Student of the Year Award. He also won the Perry Ellis Gold thimble award.

On completion of his studies, he went to work for Perry Ellis (the company; Perry Ellis had died by the time he joined) as a designer, quickly establishing himself with his creativity and talent. He followed his muse and put grunge on the catwalk; his grunge collection designed for Perry Ellis brought him noticeable fame. It didn’t go down quite as well with the powers that be at Perry Ellis however – scared that he had damaged their brand by designing clothes that women would not buy, they dismissed Jacobs and his business partner Robert Duffy.

Marc Jacobs didn’t let the setback stop him and in 1986 he designed the first collection bearing the Marc Jacob label. He was bestowed with the honor of “The Women’s designer of the Year” in the year 1992 by the Council of Fashion Designers of America.

Marc Jacobs is known for his wide ranging and incredibly interesting styles. He references themes between the present and the 1940s, mixing them and creating refreshing looks.
