The Sak Bags and Purses

The Sak purse was created by  the founders of the Elliott Lucca purse, Mark Talucci and Todd Elliott. Friends from childhood, the two men dived into the world of fashion design in 1989 creating rattan purses. In 1994 they came up with the idea for The Sak purse. The plan for The Sak purse was to create a simple, casual and relaxed handbag  with widespread appeal. They were successful with the simply designed purse; though The Sak purse was a simple design, it was a very memorable one and women of all ages loved it.

Talucci and Elliott stay true to their use of texture when designing The Sak purse. The handbag was created from a unique crochet like fabrication using nylon string. The original Sak purse was one of the most desired purses of the nineties. The phrase “A SAK on every back” originated during this time. THE SAK purse signature fabrication, Tightweave developed a large following. The popularity of the SAK purse propelled the The SAK to become the fourth largest handbag company in the United States.

The Sak purse company now offers multiple, different handbag brands, through specialized points of distribution.  The Sak currently designs and manufactures four distinct handbag brands – The Sak, Elliott Lucca, Luxy and Lina. THE SAK purses are now created from a wide range of materials  including leather, suede, canvas, straw, rattan, and wood beads.  THE SAK purses are sold in over 1900 department and specialty stores throughout the United States, and in 22 international markets.

The newest line of The Sak purses, Sakroots is a creative, soulful and dynamic collection of earth friendly, stylish handbags Sakroots demonstrates “peace and harmony among all things” with the use of environmentally-friendly materials, dyes and processes. Lacking traditional inside branding, Sakroots’ interior tags feature non-commercial messages such as “happy & free”, meant to bring cheer to each bag owner. Sakroots purses retail for less than $130 with many in the forty dollar range.

The Sak purse company has embarked on a greener future by joining up with The Nature Conservancy’s Plant a Billion Trees campaign. The Nature Conservancy’s Plant a Billion Trees campaign raises funds to restore and plant one billion trees by 2015 on 2.5 million acres of Brazil’s Atlantic Forest, one of the greatest repositories of biodiversity on Earth.  As a company, The Sak is going greener by creating a Go Green Committee in their NYC and San Francisco offices enforcing eco-friendly business practices and shipping processes.
